Mother finds out twins have down syndrome, tries to put them for adoption – changes her mind in 3rd trimester

Julie McConnell was ready to start a new life after she remarried. She already had three children from a previous marriage and then she and her husband had a son, after a while they decided to give birth to another girl.

However, Julie was once again convinced that life can be unpredictable. Now the chances of having a child with Down syndrome have increased to 1 in 100 when a woman turns 40. They’ve done quite a lot of research. After a while, they discovered that her twin boys really should be born with this disease.

At the age of 45, Julie felt that the additional burden of raising two children with special needs could be so hard. Instead, they found a family with Dan who wanted to adopt twins through the national Down Syndrome adoption network…

But after Julie and Dan found a new family for their sons, they found that they were constantly delaying signing the documents that were supposed to make the adoption official.

“We wanted to provide them with a decent life, so we contacted them,” she said.

“They organized a meeting, so they went and met with wonderful families who shared their experiences with us”

And it was at the meeting that the parents realized that they should not let fear interfere with the replenishment of their family .

“You love your children, no matter what. When we finally decided we weren’t going to let our fear stand in our way, it was an easy decision to make,” Julie said.

Being in the third trimester, they still decided to give a birth to the sons. Milo and Charlie were born healthy and happy, now Julie and Dan can’t imagine their lives without them.

“My heart jumped out of my chest when I saw them. I was so stunned,” Julie said.

“It’s hard to imagine life without them, but I think I’d miss them every day if we had decided not to keep them.”
